When
we started the children’s home in 2005, we didn’t have our own facility so we
rented a residential building and what we knew then was that our
electricity billing was done on the landlord’s name which was classified as ‘domestic’
which is heavily subsidized and the rates were low. Now that we have moved into our own building
and we are confronted with a rude shock.
We
have moved into our own building on August 4th, 2013 and the
electricity billing is done on the ‘Hope House’ name. Our electricity charges were four to five
times higher than what we were paying for in a rented building. Agreed, our consumption has increased but
what surprised us was the classification.
We are no longer considered as ‘domestic’ but as ‘commercial’ consumers. This is putting an enormous burden on our
finances. On top of this, there's a news article in the newspaper yesterday (24th September, 2014) that the government is contemplating of revising the electricity rates upwards to 30% and we see no end to our woes.
When
the donor looks at our expenses (for example the electricity charges as stated
above), there’s a tendency to believe that majority of the expenses are not
reaching the beneficiary directly. So we
are left with two choices. Either close
down the operations or go to the donor each and every year. Former is in the worst interests of those
whom we desire to serve and the latter is unsustainable.
We
decided to explore the option of technology.
We decided to learn to depend on our generous donors for a short period
to help us depend on the Mother Nature for a longer period. We want to install a windmill, biogas plant
to produce methane cooking gas and a solar water heater that are expected to
save thousands of rupees each month.
We
have given all the details at our web site (http://www.indiahopehouse.org/#!igc2014/c24x3)
that any desiring individual may need to make the decision to support us. Help us once and you’ll continue to support us
in perpetuity. The amount of money that
you give is important but the intent to make a difference in a child’s life is supremely
important so please don’t hesitate to donate any amount.
