Journalist's Journal - # 4

With the aim of nurturing and empowering the girl children so that they become successful and responsible citizens, the house functions on. Journeying thorough thick and thin, the managing body has brought the house to the present position.

The operation of housing the disadvantaged girl children stated in 2005 in a rented house in 25th east cross road, Gandhi nagar- Vellore. Due to the force of circumstances, they had to move the children to MBKG pannai, Kasam- temporarily and then to another rented house.

The incoming of more children necessitated a permanent residence. The present building is situated away from the hustle and bustle of Urban atmosphere, in a pollution free area flanked by quietness and serenity in the vicinity of the Karigiri hospital. It is a typical cost-effective building built in a style of construction introduced by Laurie Baker, a British man which features less cost of construction, structural soundness, aesthetic appeal and environment friendliness. With no plastering on the walls except the three feet plastering outside to prevent water seepage, less concrete on the roof, two layers of bricks with a hollow in between to keep the inside of the building cool, an open ventilator in the middle and the windows located parallel to one another, it occupies 1150 Sq.Ft, with meticulous planning.

The ground floor of the building offers facilities like study area, kitchen with a big fridge, comfortable dining tables, a small furnished library, common washrooms, a recreational room with a TV, computer with internet connection and an LCD projector. During the summer holidays when the girls are away, the hall can be converted into a multipurpose hall to be used for seminars, workshops etc. In the upstairs, there are four rooms with an attached wash rooms. The children are provided with bunk beds. According to the age group, the girls are allotted these rooms. The warden takes care of the younger, physically disadvantaged children in the night. Apart from the stipulated study hours the children can relax themselves with indoor games or use the outside play area.

Solar panels have been installed to support the supply of electricity. Mr. Ruby Nakka with his staff and eight board members ensures the sincere utilization of the munificence of the donors to make this house a 'home away from home' for the residence, protecting their dignity and safety to the maximum.
